No, No! Beaverchute!

Ah, those were the days, when a hare could follow the trail down from Kao Hin Hak right to the bottom without sparing a blush. These days of course, the Beaverchute is mostly concrete and it's getting worse as the hard top now intrudes to within about 200 meters of Saturday's SH3 run site, necessitating a complete rethink about where we will be running. But we will be running!

And the details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1937, Saturday August 18, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Egghead and Little Tool
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k and turn left for 8k to the new traffic lights at Wat Keow Kloy. Go ahead (i.e. don't turn right into Poonakan) for about 50m and turn left then follow the hard top road and then the track it turns into for about 1k to a T-junction. Turn right and go 100m and park considerately on the right-hand side of the road (as the left hand side has been newly plowed up) at  7.024593° 100.587769°.
Sunday's HH3 run is being set by Sex Star but where currently remains a mystery. Details will no doubt emerge and will be posted appropriately.

Double Sex!

Sex (S)Printer is setting both runs this weekend after the HH3 pussies were unceremoniously dumped at last Sunday's run in favor of a Hatyai-friendly location. The SH3 details (as if the map above were not clear enough!) are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1936 Saturday, 11th August 2018, 4:30 p.m.
Hare: Sex Sprinter
Misdirections: from the Kao Seng intersection take the old Yala road for 16k and turn right at Wat Khun Thong for 1.5k then turn left for about 300m to the run site at 7.037854° 100.643675°. From Hatyai get to Tha Kham and head east towards Wat Khun Thong for 6k to the big tree then go ahead for a further 2k and turn right.

Sunday's HH3 run is also being set by Sex Printer and the map below is self explanatory... Ok, from Songkhla get to Wat Keow Kloy (OHR, 4.6k, left 8k) and turn right into Poonakan for 5.5k then turn left for 1.5k to the run site on the right at  7.000105° 100.543971°. From Hatyai the 5.5k turn is on the right just after Wat Tung Ngai.

Hill? What hill?

As can be seen from the picture above, there was a small hill in yesterday's run which apparently rendered much of the pack a little breathless and resulted in Little Tool abandoning the run at the beer stop.

There was also a small problem on the short run, with most of the pack failing to find the squared paper from their one check, which had not been properly broken by the front runners, and they instead blundered the wrong way onto the long run. But then to their credit they found a good route home albeit about 2k longer than the one the hare intended.

Meanwhile back at the beer stop, the two short runners who had found the right route were asked to take 'Nana' (Chihiro's youngest) back to the runsite and All Black thus ended up with a 17kg 'elephant' on her shoulders for the remainder of the run, about which she was later perceived to be not best pleased. They departed marginally before the long run arrived in exactly an hour and having manfully disposed of the beer, departed for home, minus Little Tool.

With only a fairly simple F to break about 200m from the runsite, they should have all been back there  by the time the beer-stop decided to leave its post on the assumption that the rest of the short cut had short run home (or should that be the other way round?) since with Only a Yolk, who has been known to take the odd short cut, among their number, there seemed to be every chance that they were already back at the runsite. But at the scene of the last F, Egghead and Little Tool found everyone, including the missing short runners milling around completely confused as to which way the paper went, with the result that virtually the whole hash arrived back at the run site within a couple of minutes.

For the record the long run was 7.7k including all the Fs and Xs and got up to 204m with a total ascent of 390 m for anyone who was unlucky enough to find Fs 3 and 4 both of which involved abortive descents. The short run was 4.2 k with the Fs it included, but the valiant long cutters racked up 5.8k and will, it is hoped, be setting that as a long run sometime in the future!

A bunch of dicks!

Today's HH3 run, literally translated is being set by five dicks, headed by Sex of the Man (appropriately) and including Nong Gop, Beanie and Sound Chef plus whatever-the-name-of-the-guy-who-was-named-last-week-was. The runsite can be reached by turning left at the Nam Noi traffic lights (if coming from Songkhla or right from Hatyai) for about 4k then right at the hash sign for about a kilometer. Other routes are possible, and if you are coming from the Tha Kham direction you should look for the hash sign/turning on the left after about 3k. Anyone coming from Poonakan should take the Tung Nai-Pru Toh road over the hill then turn right at Wat Pru Toh for 500m then right for 1k,

News of yesterday's run follows...

Two runs and a ....

This Saturday's SH3 run is being set from the football field at Ban Sai Kao, details of which are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1935, Saturday August 4th, 2019, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Egghead and miscellaneous doggies
Misdirections: From the Kao Seng intersection, take the old Yala road for 16k and turn right just before Wat Kun Thong. Go 3.5k to the big tree then turn left just beyond it for 150m, then go straight ahead as the road bends to the right and go ahead for a further 800m to the run site on the (grass) football field. From Hatyai, the big tree is 6k east of Ban Tha Kham and the turning is on the right.

Sunday's HH3 run does not seem to have been announced yet so details will have to be added later. But before all that, on Friday night, 3rd August, there will be the first quiz night of this year at the Office Bar  The last one was in November last year but a lot has happened since then and it is not exaggerating to say that its return has taken a lot of effort - not least by tomorrow night's quiz master formerly-big-but-now just-big-hearted Alex. Who knows and more to the point, who cares what the hash team did last time! The point is that we can do it all again and better tomorrow night! So please make an effort and come along and support Alex and Eric and Carsten who have made this happen. The quiz starts at 8:00 p.m. and for those who don't know, the office bar is in Sadao road at the top end of Songkhla.

HH3 today

Today's HH3 runsite is near the football field at Kuanjong. From Poonakan Rd take the Ban Nai Lai road (from Wat Keow Kloy, 7.5 k on the left, from the junction with Kanjanawanit road, 3.5k on the right) for 3.4k and turn left for 100 meters to the runsite at 6.974846° 100.520865°. The hare is Sex Au Au.

Total eclipse of the hash

The next full moon hash run will take place tomorrow evening to coincide with the total lunar eclipse which will happen in the early hours of Saturday morning, so there will be a camp-out after the run. That will then be followed in a slightly different location by the SH3 run, assuming that the hare can stay awake long enough to set it!
Details are:
Hatyai Full Moon Hash House Harriers' run # 142, Friday, July 27, 2016. 7:00 p.m.
Hare: Sex Star
Misdirections: From The Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k and turn left for 8k then right at Wat Keow Kloy into Poonakan for  about 5.8k and turn right. (From the PSU end of Poonakan, the turning is 5.2 k on the left). Follow the road to the right at a T junction after 300m, then swing left past Rong Rien Tungnai for a total of 700m. Then leave the road into the rubber on the track to the left and follow it to the run site at 7.011608° 100.532303°.
The usual full moon stuff mostly applies although there will be no beer on sale (except at the 7-11 down the road!) . There will be a modest amount of sponsored beer, but the suggestion is to bring what you think you will drink as that way there will probably be enough beer to accommodate what you actually drink! Food is also on a contributory basis so please try not to come empty handed. If you are going to camp at the run site then a tent and sleeping bag are advisable and if you are old and have a bad back then an air mattress would help! And don't forget to bring a hand light if you intend to do the run

Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1934
Hares:Egghead and Harram
Misdirections: From The Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k and turn left for 8k then right at Wat Keow Kloy into Poonakan for 1.2k and turn laft for 500m to the run site on the left at 7.018995° 100.568821°. From the PSU end of Poonakan the turning is 9.8k on the right. Usual SH3 stuff applies, i.e. please come along and support the hares who by the time the run takes place will have been sporadically involved in laying the run for about 30 hours, one way or another!

Finally, HH3's details will have to be added later as they haven't been announced yet but the run should feature a visit from SH3's Whoremonger and Low Call Girl who will be in town to talk about the 9-11 train rumble run (and no jokes about disasters please!)

Sunday, July 22, 2018

The short long run was just 6.4kms, including the 4 false trails, which were 300 sticky feet long, or in human terms, just under 100m long. The even shorter, short run was even shorter at 3.1kms long, although it did include the only "real" hill on the run. Overall though the long run ascended 247m while the short run had a total of 133m ascent.

1300th birthday run!

No, don't worry, you haven't been asleep for 1200 years, nor has Sex Sprinter been over-optimistically printing T shirts again, but Saturday's SH3 run is a birthday run and it is also a 1300th run, though the two people who are celebrating these happy occasions  are not the same. The birthday boy is Yardstick who is also one of the hares and the 1300th run is that of Stick Insect who may or may not actually be fit enough to run it although he will definitely be in attendance.
Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1933, Saturday, July 21st 2018, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Yardstick and All Black.
Misdirections (per the hare) If coming from Songkhla, proceed to the traffic lights at Ang Thong (NYR / OYR intersection). From the traffic lights proceed south on the Old Yala Road (OYR) for 8.3kms then turn right. (19.1kms from Samrong Junction).
Note: New concrete culverts have been built alongside the OYR near the turnoff, and it can be difficult to discern which road to take. In the photo a motorbike is exiting the road you need to take. If traffic is heavy on OYR it would be more prudent to do a “U” turn past the mosque and come back and find the correct turnoff.
From OYR, proceed 2.7kms along the concrete road through the village following hash signs, then turn right and proceed for 500m to the runsite.  (7° 00.627'N 100° 38.582'E)
If coming from Hatyai, proceed along the New Chana Road for 20.6kms from the overpass on the Sadao road, or 7.8kms from the Phichit Road junction. Turn left at the Hash sign for 2.8kms along the concrete road, then turn left and proceed for 500m to the runsite.
Note: From Hatyai it would be a better option to take the Chana Road, either via the Khlong Wa intersection (overpass), or Ban Phichit, and avoid going through Chanong village.

Sunday's HH3 run is being set by Sex Kapook and his mates who set the run 3 weeks ago which resulted in your humble scribe cracking his ribs. But we'll forgive them (as they weren't responsible anyway!) and let them have another go. At the time of writing the run site has not been announced so will be added later.

Tuesday, July 17, 2018

I stumbled across this on an old hard disk drive, I wrote it years ago for a hash mag in KL. The Blog seems a little short of contributions these days so perhaps this will be of interest:

Revelation in Java! The first step of a lifelong addiction!

It was 1985 in Jakarta. My company had been asked if we would sponsor a ‘hash run’, Jakarta Hash House Harriettes. I had no idea what a hash was, but the man who asked me was fairly senior in a large oil company so it seemed wise to say “yes, we’d be delighted, who should I make the cheque out to?” (You can see why I’m so popular with all those friendly Nigerian guys who are always sending me offers of millions of dollars if I’ll just send them my bank account details!)

To my consternation, they requested that I turn up at the run site, in shorts and running shoes, so I had to buy some quickly. Wednesday arrived all too soon; couldn’t I pass on the run? No, it’s expected that the sponsor be there. I had a driver in those days, well, it was really more like a UN aid programme, ‘cause he didn’t know his way round Jakarta and got confused by the number of pedals in the car, so quite often I drove and he sat in the back, I was young then, it didn’t matter! I arrived at the run site a little bit late as one does in Jakarta, well, as this one does anywhere. Just follow the paper they said and so I did.

Trailing well behind the pack, I found myself in a Kampung, brushed dirt tracks, the vague smell of burning wood tickling your nose that is always present and hundreds of small Indonesian children, wearing their national dress of dirty T shirt, torn jeans and flip flops. They run alongside you all the while calling ‘hello mister!’ or the more linguistically inclined could also manage ‘good morning’ even though the run started at 17:00.

The paper had disappeared! At the foot of a steep hill the paper was no more, I was without, lost in that vast, atmospheric Javan landscape with only 15 words of bahasa. However, my new found friends, the gang of kampung urchins proved that they really loved their foreign visitors and pointed out the way. Half way up the hill I glanced down and saw them all, howling with laughter as they pointed at the dumb orang putih, I also saw a large group of assorted bules and Indonesian runners about 500 meters away, on the flat, going in the opposite direction. Thanking my juvenile benefactors profusely as I stumbled down the incline and wishing I knew the bahasa for ‘I’ll kill you, you little shits’ I was back on paper.

I wasn’t an athlete, never had been, loved soccer and rugby, but had no talent and I arrived back at the run site late and exhausted, the circle was under way and what a circle it was, a mixture of comedy, singing, drinking. I really felt I had discovered something special and I was hooked. I transferred to Singapore a year later when oil crashed to US$ 10/barrel. There I ran with Lion City Hash and then to KL where Petaling Hash became the destination of choice on a Saturday afternoon.

But why was the hash so special? For me the hash was unique because it was lawless and attracted people from all walks of life. I’m a non athlete, with a lung capacity about 2/3rds the size it should be due to chronic asthma, the hash encouraged everybody of any capability to turn up and do whatever you could and not just as regards running, people really made an effort to entertain, songs, stories, jokes, runs with a theme. If it was Australia day, what to do? Take the piss out of the Australians, St George’s day? Invite the British ambassador to the run site, he came and made us proud with a great humorous speech. Though I do remember the look on his face as the Jakarta Hash master thanked him in a broad Aussie accent and added, “I’m surprised you turned up mate, we thought you’d be far too full of yourself to come out here in the mud with the boys”

Jakarta men’s hash on a Monday evening, probably the best circles I’ve ever been to with the most outrageous collection of characters imaginable.
Following the trail (oh, yes, I used to do that!) one Monday evening I came across the defence attaché from the British embassy, he asked if I was the last runner, I answer in the affirmative and he

started picking up the paper, I asked him why and he looked around and whispered ‘it’s the hares, they work at the Soviet embassy, I need to see what they are up to’ the paper was squares and covered in cyrillics and that is probably the best excuse for telling the wife why you will be late home tonight that I’ve heard! (‘My dear, I have to go and drink Bir Bintang, run in the ulu and put up with the most dreadfully boring group of people, it’s so tedious but I do it for the Queen, I’ll be back on Wednesday’)

The run by the safari park near Bogor is enscribed forever: one runner scrambled under a wire fence and disappeared round some bushes, returning a moment later, white as a sheet, ‘I’ve seen a rhinoceros’ he said, ‘rubbish’ was the answer as the rest of the hashers wriggled under the fence, until the beast, not a Sumatran rhino, but a full grown African rhino appeared round the bushes, snorting loudly, perhaps the regulations concerning fencing around safari parks needed examining.

But perhaps nothing will ever eclipse the story of the Scottish Ambassador, a well known Petaling hasher, who went from the run, to the On On at a restaurant and on to the Triple On at a pub in Bangsar, KL. Early in the morning he loaded up his land cruiser with inebriated hashers and headed home, going the wrong way down a one way street. At the end of the street was a police drink driving unit. A Malay sergeant stepped up to our hero’s window and said ‘have you had any alcoholic drinks sir’ receiving the reply of ‘ only a few officer, I could do with another if you have one’

The friendly sergeant invited him to step out of his car and take a breath test. Our hero said ‘no problem officer, but there is one thing, I have diplomatic immunity, I’m the Scottish ambassador’

The sergeant walked to the front of the Land cruiser, looked at the plates and got serious ‘you don’t have CD plates sir, get out of the car’. Motioning for the policeman to come closer our ambassador asked him if he had a family? ‘Yes I do’ said the officer. ‘Then you’ll know what its’ like, there’s a reception tonight at the Venezuelan Embassy, my wife has taken the Mercedes and driver and I’m left with the land cruiser’

The sergeant stepped back, saluted smartly and said ‘Goodnight sir, I suggest you go straight home’ and it was rumoured they heard ‘to Scotland’ muttered under his breath! That’s a true story.

Ton up!

Saturday's SH3 run will be Buk Toy's 100th lay - only the third human hare to reach that milestone The run site is on the unused bit of the new Yala road above Napong and he will be accompanied by Chao Ngor, with Sex Sprinter also probably in the mix somewhere.

Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1932, Saturday July 14th 2018, 4:30 p.m.

Hares: Buk Toy, Chao Ngor and Sex Sprinter
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the new Yala road for 6.5k and cross the carriageway onto the unused section of road then follow it for 500m to the run site at the top of the hill (7.086898° N 100.610967°E). From Hatyai the suggested route is to take the old Hatyai road to the Kuan Hin traffic lights then turn right and go 4k, then follow the road straight ahead (i.e. left, as the road bends right). Go 1k then follow the hard top road left at the 4-way intersection for 500m and at the junction with the NYR, turn right along the hard shoulder onto the unused section.

Sunday's HH3 run is out of Robocop and is at 6.992380° N100.527250° E which is about 1.5k from Poonakan along the Ban Nai Lai road, on the left (the BNR turning is 7.5 k down Poonakan from Wat Keow Kloy on the left or 3.5k up from the intersection with Kanjanawanit Road on the right). Map below.

Free the birds - Run 1931 Rehash

Due to public demand here is a picture of budgie smugglers, the apparel not the man, as modelled by past Australian PM Tony Abbot, ...and not nearly as impressive as our own Budgie Smuggler of course. Anyway thanks to Budgie Smuggler and a really impressive turnout by the Hatyai contingent, we had a relatively large attendance at the Songkhla Hash run yesterday, giving us further impetus to keep SH3 going, even if the farang contingent was rather tiny. If we can get even half as many farangs as we had Thais yesterday, at future runs, we may even make our next big goal, Run 2000 towards the end of next year. Of course having a few more people volunteering as hares, rather than the usual 2 or 3 will make this goal even easier to achieve. So come on let’s see some different hares for a change, and maybe even some “fun runs”.
The run stats for yesterday were just under 6.0km (was that all? ..and that included all the false trails!) for the long run and just over 250m in total ascent. The short run was 4.2km with 150m ascent, although few if anyone completed the whole of the short run, possibly apart from Super Pig & Ruu Kap Jang, & our GM of course.

Rubber!

Ah, rubber! Doesn't it make you want to pull on a pair of shorts and some running shoes and leave your inhibitions at the run site?
Good news, tomorrow's run will feature plenty of this and lot's more as well. So please come along and make the hare's efforts worthwhile.

Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run # 1931, Saturday, July 7th, 2018, 4:30 p.m.
Hare: Yardstick
Misdirections: From the Khao Seng intersection take the Old Yala Road for 16km (5.3km from the NYR / OYR intersection at Ang Thong) and turn right just before Wat Kuhn Thong. Proceed along the concrete & bitumen road for 2.7km, turn left and go 1.8km (bearing right) to the runsite amongst the rubber trees.
Runsite co-ordinates are: N 07° 01.58' E 100° 38.06'.
For Hatyai visitors go to the big tree in the middle of the road at Ban Sai Khao, then go straight ahead, past the big tree, for 760m and turn right for 1.8km.

Sunday's HH3 runsite is as per the map below. From the Tha Kham Intersection go South for 1km and turn left (or from Wat Keow Kloy go North for 1km and turn right) follow the road for about 800m to the run site on the right. Sex Printer is the hare.

A change of runsite to the runsite that it changed from in the first place

Today's HH3 runsite has now moved back to its original location (7.011608° 100.532303°) as whatever impediments to vehicles getting there have now been repaired by the owner (Pii Lak). So as you were: From The Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k and turn left for 8k then right at Wat Keow Kloy into Poonakan for  about 5.8k and turn right. Follow the road to the right at a T junction after 300m, then swing left past Rong Rien Tungnai for a total of 700m. Then leave the road into the rubber on the track to the left and follow it to the run site.

Today's HH3 run site has been changed as shown below:
Misdirections now read: From The Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k and turn left for 8k then right at Wat Keow Kloy into Poonakan for  about 5.8k and turn right. Follow the road to the right at a T junction after 300m, then swing left past Rong Rien Tungnai for a total of 700m to the run site on the left. Coordinates are: 7.008591° 100.534747°

Missed it!

...which is what most people did to run 1930. So after the heady masses of last weekend (60 hounds v 1 hare) it was back to Egghead and Harram v the hardcore (19 people, most of whom claimed anthropoid ancestors somewhere in their evolution).
For once more people opted for the long run while the short run was mostly made up of canines who arrived at the beer stop in two waves  with their human minders within about 35 minutes of the off. The long run weren't far behind with Sex Sprinter, who may have been economical with his trail etiquette (ok, he short-cut, as usual), arriving in 47 minutes, with All Black and Lot Rakaa last to arrive but only 5 minutes or so later. Everyone, including the doggy tendency then set off for the final kilometer back to the runsite, including Harram who initially decided to opt for a ride back to the run site but then realized her duty and set off to herd her conspecifics and the ape-descendants over the hill.
For the record, the long run 'all in' was 7.1k and All Black who avoided the F's measured it at 6.26k. The short run was about 3.5k and both runs got up to a high point of 90m or so just before the last F. Notable in returning was Crackwurst after an 8 month absence and Stick Insect after his week off last weekend. Gan Yao praised the hares for managing not to sully his run with paper, and was last home having avoided the beer stop again.

How Long?

No, no, not how long, Kao Long! As in:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1930, Saturday 30th June 2018, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Egghead and Harram
Misdirections: From the Kao Seng intersection take the old Yala road for 11.8k and turn right. Follow the road past Wat Kao Lam, across 2 sets of crossroads and through a small village, for 4k then turn right onto the road heading towards Kao Long. Go 1.2 k and turn right into the run site at 7.050107° 100.613607°. From Hatyai, get to the Tha Kham crossroads and head east towards the big tree for about 5.5k then turn left on the road heading towards Kao Long (under the new temple arch). Go 600m. and bear left at the Y junction then go on for a further 1.2k to the run site on the right.

Sunday's HH3 run is from the putative housing development near Thung Ngai School: from The Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k and turn left for 8k then right at Wat Keow Kloy into Poonakan for  about 5.8k and turn right. Follow the road to the right at a T junction after 300m, then swing left past Rong Rien Tungnai for a total of 700m. Then leave the road into the rubber on the track to the left and follow it to the run site at 7.011608° 100.532303°. From the bottom end of Poonakan the turning is 5.2k and on the left which seems to make it remarkably conveniently placed for the GM who is being spoiled these days! Map below:

SH3: the afternoon after the night before

After their excellent 900th run today, HH3 have generously donated their regular weekly slot on Sunday to SH3 so that this Sunday's run will be:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run  #1929, Sunday June 24th, 4:30 p.m.
Hare: Ru Man Kap
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k and turn left for 12.2k (passing Wat Keow Kloy at 8k and Wat Nern Pijit at about 11k in the process) then turn right for 1k to the run site on the football pitch on the right. Pretty much everybody who was at the HH3 run today has said that they will be coming along, so if you didn't make that try to get to the SH3 run to keep all those good vibes from this afternoon's run vibrating.

HH3 900

SH3 will be taking part in the HH3 900th run celebrations this Saturday, June 23, 2018, run starts at 3:00 p.m. (or to be advised) so there will be no run in Songkhla as such but the location of the HH3 run, which is close to the Wang Pa waterfall is shown on the map above.
Some caveats:
  • The run site is at:  6.892467° 100.237799°
  • This map starts at the turn off for the Ton Na Chang Waterfall on the 4026. In order to get to that point you should take the new Hatyai road and turn left at the T junction at the end onto route 4/AH2 for about 1.3k then turn right at the next big intersection onto the 4267 (or according to the map, 4067) signposted to Satun and Ton Na Chang Waterfall.
  • Follow that road for about 9k then turn left onto the 4026 signposted to Ton Na Chang Waterfall and follow that road for 10.4k...
  • ...then turn left at the hash sign onto the 5017 (or according to Google Maps 5071)....
  • ...then just follow the map and look for the hash signs...
  • ...don't be phased by the rest of the distances, they assume that you zero your trip-meter at the 4026 turn off so the run site is actually only about another 7.5k from the first hash sign.
  • The final approach to the run site may be challenging for lesser vehicles so if you think your vehicle may be challenged give someone a call at the final hash sign and transport can be arranged.
  • If you are going to stay the night, as far as is known there isn't any accommodation provided so a tent is highly advisable!
  • But all are welcome and if you fancy joining the run just turn up and pay 60 Baht...we hope!
Any questions?

It also seems likely that there will be a regular HH3 run on Sunday June 24, with the location yet to be confirmed (although when last heard it was a toss up between the football field at Tung Ngai and that at Nern Pijit. More details on Saturday or they will be posted here later.

It never rains....

...but it pours! HH3's run yesterday was held in conditions that would have been more appropriate for Manchester, or Melbourne maybe, as the temperature plummeted to the low 20's and the rain fell like... well like rain.

Half an our before the advertised start it was so heavy that the run site had to be moved onto the concrete football pitch and that move and the usual need to wait for still more runners delayed the start to almost 4:30, much to the concern of the hares. But all was well and probably because everybody knew more or less where they were going to be going, most of both the short and long runners were at the beer stop in about an hour, in good time to be able to get back to the run site before dark.

The known exception at that stage was Mr. Bean/Beanie so the hares set off in the Egg-truck in search, finding him almost back at the half way point standing by the side of the track looking confused and mumbling incoherently (ok, he was speaking Thai!) about four more people, who turned out to be not long runners as would be expected, but short runners, including Sexy Cop who had been reported to be safely back at the run site and Sagai who had apparently baulked at the hill and decided that as the long run was not going up it, they should follow that, little suspecting that the cunning hares were just delaying the inevitable climb. All five were loaded onto the back of the truck and transported back to a very damp run site.

For the record, the long run was 8.1k or 9k with the F's and the single X and ascended 279 meters in total getting up to 222m. The short run had a bit less ascent but still maxed at 209m at the beer stop and covered about 5.7k all in including a couple of the F's.

The evening ended with Ban Sai Kao's ditches (yes, Ditches) claiming another victim as Inchdick, possibly because he had former victim, Lady of the Lamp sitting in his truck, managed to get bogged down just north of the run site, eventually being pulled clear by the Egg-truck after some Heath-Robinsonesque methods employing rocks, planks of wood and a jack managed to free the vehicle from its bog. But once again the good people of Ban Sai Kao turned out to help as they have done on at least one occasion before.

SH3's 1928th run!

Glad tidings from the hare:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1928, Saturday June 16, 2018. 16:30.
Hare: Gan Yao
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the new Hat Yai road for
about 8.6km. Turn left by the hash sign onto the blacktop road. Go for
250 meters and turn left by the sign, go 440 meters and park by the
hare's Toyota Starship.
'Cause it’s such an idyllic spot some days the mozzies like it here too,
so bring some repellent if they bother you.
Runsite is at: 7°06’09.15”N 100°31’02.40”E

From Hatyai this is probably best approached from the Nam Noi traffic lights. Turn left and go 6k and the hash sign will be on the right. If you need to come down Lopburiramesuan road, then look for the sign next to the opposite carriageway on the turning before the hill/True Moves tower than go 2k and do a U turn and come back 2k to the turning on the left etc.

Sunday's HH3 run is as advised below, at the football field at Ban Sai Kao at 7.033159° 100.624725°and is illustrated in the helpful graphic (let's not dignify it with the word "map") slightly less below.

From Songkhla get to Wat Khun Thong (OYR, 16k and turn right for 3.5k then turn left just past the big tree and follow the road straight ahead (i.e. don't turn right after 150m) for about 800m. From Hatyai, get to Tha Kham and head East (towards the big tree) then just before the big tree at about 6k, turn right etc.  Please try to be there in time for a 4:00 p.m. start (well, ok, 4:10!)

HH3's 900th run

On 23-24 June there will be a joint HH3 – SH3 run at Wang Pa waterfall on the way to Rathaphum in celebration of the HH3 900th run (more details later). Registration will be 60 baht and the T shirt will be 200 Baht. Please let Sex Sprinter know as soon as possible (i.e. before the weekend) if you want a shirt so that he can order your size. The rego and the T shirt can be paid for in advance at this Sunday’s (17th June) HH3 run which will be from the football field at Sai Kao (7.033159° 100.624725°).

Dream on!

Ok, so C-in-a-H has invoked MLK, so let's use him as our inspiration this week....
I have a dream hashers and harriets, that this will be the week when all those people who keep saying that they are going to come back to the hash will wake up tomorrow morning with a new sense of purpose and fill the run site with cars to overflowing. I have a dream that every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plane, and the crooked places will be made straight
....but then that's up to the hare! Details are:

Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1927, Saturday, June 9, 2018, 4:30 p.m.
Hare: Yardstick
Misdirections: From the Kao Seng intersection take the Old Yala Road for 16 km (5.3 km from the NYR / OYR intersection at Ang Thong) and turn right just before Wat Kuhn Thong. After 2.0 km turn left and proceed approximately 1.2 km along the new concrete & dirt road to the runsite at 7° 01.922' N 100° 38.514' E. Hatyai visitors take the Nam Noi -Thung Wang road East through Ban Tha Kam to Ban Sai Khao then go straight ahead  past the big tree for 1.4 km and turn right for 1.2 km.

Sundays HH3 run is being set by Robocop and unless anything has changed since last weekend will be from the football field at Tungnai (Poonakan, 4.5 k from Wat Keow Kloy. 6.5 k from the Kanjanawanit Rd traffic lights or about 2k from the GM's apartment! For anyone who has not been to HH3 recently, you might be surprised to know that attendances are pushing 70 these days with a big influx of new runners so it would be really nice if we could do the same thing at SH3 (Hint! Hint!)

Dam!

In case any encouragement were needed, here are a couple of shots of Saturday's idyllic run site taken by hare, Little Tool, and for those who missed the HH3 run at the same site a few months back, note that lovely concrete road which now stretches all the way back to the Nam Noi-Tha Kham road, so avoiding all that nasty pot-holey stuff that used to be involved in getting there.

Details are: Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1926, Saturday June 2, 2018.
Hares: Conebrain and Little Tool
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for about 10k to the Nam Noi traffic lights and turn left. Go 1.5k and turn right (at 7°02'47.5"N 100°31'55.8"E) then follow the road for about 1.5k to the run site (at 7°02'08.9"N 100°31'31.3"E).

Sunday's HH3 run has been entrusted to Sex Au Au and the run site is somewhere in the wastelands behind Macro. Details of how to get there, in the form of a map, will, it is hoped be added later.

Meanwhile, don't forget Little Tool and Tool Box's birthday party at Oscar's Bar on Friday night 1st June from 6:00 p.m. to which all are cordially invited.
As promised. From Wat Keow Kloy take Poonakan for about 9k and turn left at the hash sign then go across the klong and up the hill to a T junction and turn right onto the road coming from Gam Ling reservoir. (You can also get onto that road from the Ban Nai Lai turning but that's another story.) Look for the hash sign and then turn left and go an indeterminate distance to the run site on the right.

Ageless

This Saturday, our longest established active runner and our newest naming join forces to set a run together, and we're not saying which is which!
Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run # 1925, Saturday May 26, 2018
Hares: Raprakaa and Wi Wi
Misdirections: From the Koh Yor intersection go 7.4 km on the New Hatyai Road, make a sharp left turn at the entrance to the Korakot Restaurant (see picture below); go 200 meters and make a right turn then go 300 meters to the run site
at  7.101813° N 100.526071° E.

The hares offer some cautionary advice:
 1. The road in front of the restaurant is rough with a large bump that will spoil the bottom of low sitting cars.
 2.  Proceed past the run site for 200 meters, turn around and park near the run site on the left facing the main road.  There is an alternative turning place 50 m past the run site, on the left, but large ditches and uneven surface can also spoil your day if you get things slightly wrong.
3.  It goes without saying that mosquito repellent is a good idea!

Sunday's HH3 run will be set by Robocop and will be from the same run site as was used by SH3 (not HH3) last week, i.e. 1.3k along from Wat Pru Toh on the PruToh-Tung Ngai road or if you are coming from Poonakan, 5.5k from either Wat Keow Kloy or the  Kanchanawanit Road end, turn right or left, respectively and go 2.8k  (7.029317° N, 100.545433° E)

Sunday, May 20, 2018

Yesterday's run and today's directions.

A better than average turnout turned out and both long (7.1k) and short (4.5k) runs were well supported. The Beer stop almost didn't occur as the long run pack narrowly beat the hare, who was out laying the in trail for the short run, to the meeting point. But anguished cries of "Beer stop! Beer stop!" did the trick and the pack returned to enjoy the beer shortly before they were joined by the front end of the short run pack. The rest of the long run was therefore somewhat less athletically achieved and the 5th F, which must have been all of 10 meters long, caused some problems, with the result that the long run took close to an hour and a half to finish and trailed even the back end of the short run pack home.

Today's HH3 run is on the road leading up to Kan Lao - from Wat Keow Kloy take Poonakan Road for 5.5k and turn left just before Wat Tung Ngai (or from the bottom of Poonakan take it for 5.5k and turn right just after Wat Tung Ngai.) Follow the road for about 3.5k and turn right at the HH3 sign then follow the road until you see signs of a runsite.

Once more unto the breach...

Without the firm hand of the hare-raiser to fill the roster last week, this week's hares are again Egghead and co, and just for a change the run site is not a million miles from Poonakan, but this time on the other side of the road, not far from the Or Bor Tor at Pru Toh.
Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1924, Saturday May 19th, 2018, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Egghead etc.
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 10k to the Nam Noi traffic lights and turn left for 3.7k then turn right immediately after Wat Pru Toh for 1.3k to the run site on the left. From Hatyai, If you are coming from the PSU end of Poonakan, take the left turn at 5.5k just after Wat Tungnai and go 2.8k. The run site is on the right.

No news from HH3 yet, but there is the suggestion of a trip to Yala for a run there on 29th May (which is a holiday). The run actually takes place in Yala city and starts at 6:00 a.m. although there seem to be 4, 10, 21 and 42k options so that may depend on which one you feel capable of! If we were going to do it, it would probably be sensible to go down the previous evening and stay over night. Sex Sprinter is offering to put people up at his house down there which would probably involve sleeping bags and back pain, but Yardo has access to a resort with the unlikely name of the Egg House (really, really!) which costs 500 Baht a night for a room and has a nice area available to sit out in the moonlight and drink ...lime cordial-yeah! There is an online registration form (but no details) here. This will probably be discussed at the weekend so think about it!

HH3 Today

,,,which roughly translated means that it's opposite the Sai Kao Resort. Get to Tha Kham and head East (towards the big tree) then look for a sign and turn right into the  rubber at about 4k. The hares  are Mr. Bean and Moo Toon with Sex Printer providing technical advice. HH3 runs start around 4:15 p.m. but call someone if you are going to be late and they'll wait.

No Frills

With only time for a single recce and a late decision to set on Friday afternoon instead of Saturday, there was every chance that 1923 would be a disaster. But it all turned out ok with the modestly large pack following Sex Sprinter round for most of the way  before he disappeared off into short-cut land managing to rejoin the pack just as it began the final descent back to the runsite. All up, the long run was 7k including the generous X at the furthest point of the run which caught Stick Insect and had most of the long runners back together before the real ascent of the hill after 360 7. First home was SI as SS moved over to let him lead the pack home in 1 hr 12 mins, well after most of the short run were home from their 3.8k. The long run ascended 270m with the maximum just over 160m while the shout run ascended about half that to the same maximum height. Heartfelt pleas for shorter circles were heeded and everything was done and dusted by 7:00 p.m., so fast in fact that Palm Job was away and homeward bound before R2D2 could even politely inquire after a lift home. Meanwhile, Egghead slunk home for a well-earned break from haring duties... NOT! He's the hare next week!

More Egg

This week's SH3 run gives Egghead another chance to add to his haul of lays as it approaches 250 for SH3 with another 140 or so for HH3 and HFMH3. You'd think after all those he might set a decent run once in a while!

This weekend's effort is conveniently placed in Poonakan, just in case the GM has a transport problem again! Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1923, Saturday May 12, 2018, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Egghead and Harram
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k then turn left for 8k then right (at Wat Keow Kloy) for 1.3k and then turn left for 500m to the run site. From the PSU end of Poonakan, the turning is at about 10k on the right. or if you are coming from Nam Noi, then get to Tha Kham, and head South for 2k to Wat Keow Kloy then turn right for 1.3k etc.

HH3 details for Sunday to follow shortly.

Deja vous?

Lady of the Lamp recovered from his apparently terminal directagnosia to realize that this was his own run (SH3 1919 - was it really only 3 runs ago?) set without some of the more extravagant additions. The short run reached the (unmarked - somewhere after F8) beer stop in about 50 mins. The long run got there in an hour 11.
What happened next? Too difficult to explain!

The almost non-return of the GM

After travelling halfway around the world to be with us at the hash on Saturday, and cancelling an important prior engagement, our GM was forgotten by our anonymous front runner (SS, no not the one in Blighty), and left waiting at the door at her home in Hatyai. Jumping on her steed and racing to be at the circle for the start of the run, meanwhile being rescued and escorted to the runsite by YS, our beloved GM, All Black, made a tumultuous return, to once again lead the flock through the valleys of horror.
Well actually more like the horrible hills, if one was to listen to the complaints of the back-checked long (& short) runners.
The long run was in fact only 4.8km long and only a mere 175m in ascent, so it should have been one of the easiest runs of the year. Admittedly there were the 3 check-backs & 7 false trails which may have added a little bit to the length, if anyone, and quite a few of the long runners did, venture down, or up, most of them. Luckily due to the tight confines of the surrounding hills, no-one was lost and everyone returned to the runsite for a rather long & boisterous circle.

The return of the GM

This weekend sees the return of our glorious leader who has been away in foreign parts collecting delicacies for us to enjoy, a selection of which she will no doubt be bringing on Saturday to the run site, details of which are:

Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1822, Saturday May 5, 2018, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Yardstick and Little Tool.
Misdirections: From the Kao Seng intersection take the old Yala road south for 17.6km (6.9km from the NYR / OYR intersection at Ang Thong) and turn right just after Ban Thang Khwai School with the bright yellow fence. After 1.2km turn right and follow the track through the rice paddies for 500m, turning right at the second ‘T’ junction for a further 800m to the runsite.

From Hatyai, get to the Tha Kham crossroads and head East for 6km to the big tree then go straight ahead for a further 3.5km to Wat Khun Thong on the old Yala road, and turn right for 1.7km then turn right just after Ban Thang Khwai School. After 1.2km turn right and follow the track & signs for 1.3km to the runsite. The tracks are good all weather tracks, suitable even for little March’s and shopping trolleys, ….and the run is totally canine safe.

Sunday's HH3 run is being set by Kai Jeow and Moo Sahb and the runsite is at the big sala at Napong: From the Kuan Hin Traffic lights on the old Hatyai road, turn left if coming from the Ko Yo intersection, or right if coming from Hatyai and follow the road for 5.2k, bearing right with the road at 4k rather than going off on the left turning. Turn left opposite the temple arch for Wat Borogam and go 500m to the run site at 7.074554° 100.606316°.

Today's run and yesterday's news

Today's HH3 run is behind the Chinese cemetery at Ban Phru, in front of the autistic school at 6.956081° N 100.486193° E. From Songkhla  (or Hatyai for that matter) Get to the Klong Wa intersection between Kanjanawanit road and Route 43 beyond Macro/Central Festival and head south towards Sadao for 2k, then turn left into the Chinese cemetery and follow signs for about 1k to the runsite. The hare is Robocop...

...who kind of saved the day yesterday as just as it looked as if the long run was going to struggle to get a decent pack together, turned up with Square Peg and made it look respectable. Ok, so he short cut remorselessly throughout the run then POE'd to avoid the ice, but with several notable absences yesterday his presence was much appreciated. The long run was 7.4k and traversed 2 small hills before heading around the third one to arrive at the beer stop at exactly the same time as the short run who covered 4.4k all told, including about half the F's and 360's, even finding one of the X's which the long run had avoided. Bob from Yala was our new runner who said he would try to come again; Jump Shot and Yardstick were the token sinners for calling on on when not on, and Stick Insect who was first to the beer stop and first home was done for competitive running. Egghead and Harram were faintly praised for a reasonable run at short notice despite the goat tracks with which it commenced (and Cherie is still smarting about that anti-ungulate slur!)

Business as usual

An artist's impression of Saturday's SH3 runsite
After all that excitement last week at the HH3 outstation run, it's back to the routine business of accommodating the hashing masses of SH3 who, judging from most of the responses to Yardo's latest appeal for hares, are located elsewhere than in Songkhla! So if you are in Songkhla or its environs, please try to come along this Saturday and swell the numbers to make up for those who sadly cannot be with us as we can't afford to pay their airfares home.

For the occasion, the hare has found a totally new runsite, set next to a river which gently meanders between trees and beneath a rustic bridge. And the run itself is in an area to which we have not ventured for about three years and which anyway has changed beyond all recognition, so the whole experience will feel like a new beginning in your hashing life... until you get back to the runsite when it will be the same old beer truck and the same old beer!

Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1921, Saturday April 28, 2018, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Egghead and Harram
Misdirections: from the Kao Seng intersection, take the old Yala road for 14k (3k past the intersection of the old and new Yala roads) and turn left for 2k then turn right onto the track by the bridge into the runsite at  7.058570° N 100.664136° E. If you are coming from Hatyai, get to Tha Kham and head East for 6k then go straight ahead at the big tree for a further 3.5k to reach the old Yala road at Wat Khun Thong. Turn left for 2.3k then right for 2k then turn right into the runsite.  Final message, the short run will be A-B so if you are intending to do it, please try not to be late or let us know by phone that you are on the way so that we can hold the transport for you.

HH3 on Sunday? Hmmm.... It'll be added later.

HH3 Outstation 23...

These two pictures just about sum it up - no words are necessary!

Thursday, April 19, 2018

Gas station?

Information about this weekend's outstation run continues to seep out like blood from a stone. But there is now a new meeting point which is at the PTT station immediately before the turn off to the resort. The entrance to the PTT station is at 7.891071° N  99.929704° E, which is 121 km from the end of the New Hatyai road's intersection with Route 4/AH2 . Time? Well, I am not so politely informed that all Thais eat lunch at 12:00 noon so it should be before then!

HH3 outstation: the lowdown.

No runs in Songkhla this weekend as HH3 are taking us off to Phatthalung for an outstation run. The details of which are:

HH3 run # ? (outstation run # ?) April 20 - 22, 2018.
Location: Somewhere in Phatthalung
Hares: ?
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the new Hatyai road for 25k then turn right/north onto route 4/AH 2. Go 120 km and look for a hash sign on the southbound carriageway outside a restaurant called ?. Do a U turn and come back to the restaurant for lunch at: ? a.m./p.m. If you don't want lunch then turn left off route 4/AH2 after 122 km at   7.893027° N 99.929456° E and head East for at least 10 km until you see a hash sign outside a resort rendered phonetically as Nam Chum Pon. Go in and register your presence!

Ok, so there are a few details missing but they will all be filled in by Friday! Keep checking this post for updates.

1920: the run that ate Mrs. Garmin

RIP GPS: Mrs' Garmin who narrowly avoided being drowned just down the road at HH3 last year, and has not been feeling herself ever since has tracked her last satellite, refusing to perform on Saturday morning for the short run (green) which is therefore an "artist's impression" of where the middle section of the 3.6k went. The long run (cerise) is however Mrs. G's swansong and was accurate enough to detect the fact that the run just barely impinged on Yardo territory after the 3rd F, but otherwise did not cross his trails from recent runs. She logged the whole run at 8.6k but Google Earth lopped 10% off that and without  the 8 F's the distance was under 7k with a total ascent of about 200m, topping out at that 3rd F at 106m.
A strong turnout from our HH3 buddies and a couple of surprise returnees kept us over the 30 mark for the third week in a row but there will be no run next week in view of the the HH3 outstation run.

Enough water, already!

With Songkran appearing to have started a day early this year and with the probability that it will extend into the weekend, SH3 on Saturday afternoon will be a dry haven for anyone who thinks enough is enough, as the likelihood of encountering anyone with a water gun, hose or even a bucket in the wilds of Pijit are pretty much zero! So, wring out your undies, drain the water from your ears, put on your runners and join us at:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1920, Saturday April 14th 2018, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Egghead, Only a Yolk and Harram
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.6k and turn left for about 10.3k (2.3k past Wat Keow Kloy) and  turn left. After 150m, bear right and follow the road/track for 1.2k to the run site in the rubber on the left at 7 00.642N 100 35.704 E.

Sunday's HH3 run will be set by Robocop and details will probably be announced on Saturday so will be posted here later. Meanwhile back to Friday the 13th when there will be the usual mayhem in Songkhla although the hash will not be 'running' officially for the first time in living memory. But Little Tool and Tool Box have stepped into the breach and will be holding a BBQ at their house at 11/2 Thanon Sadao Soi 3, (7°12'31.1"N 100°35'38.6"E or https://goo.gl/maps/jDLpD9wC7xH2which is near the Chinese Consulate) between 10 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Leave your water guns at the door and take some beer instead!
