An old fashioned run

Old fashioned as in an old run site, an area that we have used many times before and a couple of  really old (and just slightly misused) hares. But at least the beer will be new!
Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1876, Saturday June 3, 2017, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Egghead and Harram
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4k and turn left at the Kuan Hin traffic lights. Go 5.2k and turn left opposite the temple arch at Borogam. Follow the road as it bends gently right for 1.4k to the run site at N 7 071682 E 100 612101.
From Hatyai, the Kuan Hin turning off the old road is on the right and about 13k beyond the Ko Hong traffic lights or about 6.5k from the Nam Noi traffic lights.
Sunday's HH3 run is currently in the research and development phase so if you are part of that new fangled Line thingy that the Hatyai guys seem to prefer, please post details here and elsewhere if you get to know before me! (And don't forget the coordinates!)

Run 1875

With only a half a dozen long runners and about the same number of short runners, it was a pretty small turn-out for this run, but still a great time was had by all. The long run was 6.5km and a climb of just over 300m, while the short run was 3.5km and 150m in elevation change.

Yeah, right. Like the cheque's in the post!
Anyway, this week's SH3 details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harrier's run # 1875, Saturday May 27th 2017, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Yardstick and All Black
Misdirections: From Songkhla, proceed to the traffic lights at Ang Thong, at the NYR / OYR intersection. From the Ang Thong traffic lights proceed south on the Old Yala Road (OYR) for 8.3kms then turn right onto the concrete road just before the entrance to the small mosque (opposite the large microwave tower on the east side of OYR), 19.1kms from Samrong Junction. Proceed 3.6kms along the concrete road through the village following hash signs, to the runsite at the T junction.
If coming from Hatyai, proceed along the New Chana Road for 20.6kms from the overpass on the Kanchanwanit Road at Khlong Wa intersection, or 7.8kms from the Phichit Road junction. Turn left at the Hash sign for 1.8kms along the concrete road, to the runsite at the T junction.

Sunday's (28th May) HH3 run will be set by Sex Printer from Soi Suan Phik which is a turning off the road which connects Nam Noi to the new Hatyai road. From Songkhla take the New Hatyai road for about 7.5k and turn left after the True Moves. tower and follow the road for about 1.5k. Turn left into Soi Suan Phik and follow it until you see something that resembles a runsite. From Hatai if you are following the new road, go past the hill at Ta Jin and do a U turn then come back about 1k and turn left as above. Or if you prefer the old Hatyai/Songkhla road, get to the Nam Noi traffic lights and turn left (from Hatyai) or right (from Songkhla) then go about 2.5k and turn right into Soi Suan Phik. Goddit?

Before all that, this month's quiz night will take place on Friday 26th May at the Office Bar kicking off at 8:00 p.m. The strangely victorious hash team will be taking on all comers, but without the services of Egghead who will be setting the quiz. Come along and support whatever good cause we are donating to this year (probably the blind kids ed,.)

What went wrong this week?

Well, actually not a lot. No one got lost or angry or threw anything and although yesterday's HH3 run lacked the impressive scale of Saturday's SH3 A-B run or the previous week's HH3  monster, the pack were generally enthusiastic and showed their enthusiasm by good-humoredly sticking around to the bitter end in the hope of polishing off the beer.

For the record, the long run was measured by Mapsource  at about 6k but with the 8Fs and 2X's added expanded to a tolerable 7.5k. However the short run which by Mapsource should have been 4.2k was logged on Sex Teacher's GPS as just over 5k, so the long run may have been a little longer.

But everybody made the beer stop within an hour. Despite LotL's complaint about going up too many hills, the long run didn't scale either of the two available peaks, skirting around both for a maximum height around the 4th 360 of 251m with a total ascent sans Fs and Xs of about 280m .For much of the long run the in and out trails were less than 200m apart  and at no point were the two trails more than 600m apart so that the area enclosed was only 700sqm, surely one of the lowest figures possible for a 6k run. But despite that, short-cutting seemed not to be a major problem as much of that 700sqm was impassible terrain  The short run meanwhile hit a creditable 200m.following a fairly well-worn track particularly familiar to Sex Teacher since on her first SH3 run she accidentally did pretty much the same run after missing the turn off for the short run, vowing never to leave the safety of the rescue vehicle and certainly never to return to the hash. Yesterday as well as leading the short run pack round, she was also the only one to then add the walk out to the beer stop which sadly did not service.the short runners. A worthy performance from SH3's GM!

This week's SH3 run is loosely speaking a birthday run as two of the four hares are celebrating around now.
Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1874, Saturday May 20th 2017, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Stick Insect, Eightball, Keeling and Fathima
Misdirections: From The Kao Seng intersection take the old Yala road for 8.2k and do a U turn, then come back 700m and turn left into Chompoo Soi 11. Follow the road/track for 500m to the run site.
From Hatyai, (avoiding the Ko Yo intersection) Get to  Tha Kham and head East for about 5.5k then turn left under the new temple arch on the road leading to Kao Long. After 500m, bear right away from Kao Long and follow the road for about 4k through several villages and across 2 crossroads until it comes out on the old Yala road just after passing Wat Kao Lam. Turn left and go north for about 4.5k then turn left into Chomphoo Soi 11 etc. Note: The long run will be an A-B run so there will be transport to the A site leaving the B site (in Chompoo Soi 11) sharp at 4:30 p.m. So please try to be there early so the transport can leave on time. It is understood that the short run will not require transport so anyone arriving late can do that.

Sunday's HH3 run is being set by Kai Jeow not a million miles from where last Sunday's Inchdick monster was set. Full directions are:
(From Songkhla) From the Kao Seng intersection take the old Yala road for 16k and turn right just before Wat Khun Thong for 3.5k, then turn left just after the big tree and go 150 meters. Bear right following signs through the village for about 800m then turn left at the T junction onto the concrete road heading for the hill. After 200m take the third turning on the right just before the chicken farm and follow the dirt track/new concrete road for 1k to the run site. Park considerately as there is not a lot of off road parking. Coordinates are: 7.025486N, 100.619056E or thereabouts. From Hatyai get to Tha Kham and go east for 6k then turn right just before the big tree and follow the directions above.

Revenge of the SH3 Oldies

This was another upside-down run to counter Sex Printer's Full Moon horror run last Tuesday night. The long run was a ‘moderate’ length of 9.6km, including the 10 x 360s, 4 x false trails and 2 check-backs; the beerstop coming in at 7.7km from the start. The total ascent was a not so modest 435m starting at the maximum height of 234m. dropping to a minimum height of 63m before working it’s way back to the beerstop at the top of the ridge before going over and down the other side to the runsite.
The short run also started at the same height and dropped down to 71m before going back up the ridge to the beerstop at the top; and then proceeding down the other side to the runsite. The total length for the short run was 4.7km and a climb of 166m; and included 3 x 360s.
The first checkback was cleverly avoided by all when Sex printer, not being a front runner on this occasion, looked for, and found, paper well short of the 360. However the front runners, Sex Printer included at this stage, were well flummoxed by the checkback at X02, and after further confusion at C07 at the bottom of the hill enabling most of the back-runners to arrive at the beerstop ahead of the usual front-runners.

No recce no cry

I suspected this one was going to go totally off the rails, as I'd had no time to go scouting and so improvised the whole thing yesterday morning. Plus for some inexplicable reason I thought I'd make it a figure-8, which is always asking for trouble. But in fact people seemed to stay on paper, apart from the shameless Egghead, who skipped what he called a "useless loop". Remind us again, what part of a hash run is "useful"?

The long run came to just over 7km with a mere 180m of ascent. Short run was probably just under 4km. The first short runners hit the beer stop in a little over 40 minutes, and the first long runners in just over an hour. The circle was notable for several demonstrations of All Black's fully developed grand mistressing style, which might be described as an iron fist in an iron glove. You have been warned!

Then you're in luck because they're both setting runs this weekend. Up first is Beaver for SH3 on Saturday who returns to another of his personal runsites near Nern Pijit. Details are:

Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1873,
Saturday May 13th 2017, 4:30 p.m.
Hare: Beavershot
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k and turn left for 10.2k (2.2k beyond Wat Keow Kloy) then turn right and follow the road/track for about 1k to the runsite. From Hatyai, get to the top of Poonakan and turn right for 2.2k then turn RIGHT etc.

Inchdick is in action for Sunday's HH3 run behind Sai Kao village on the concrete road: Full directions are: From the Kao Seng intersection take the old Yala road for 16k and turn right just before Wat Khun Thong for 3.5k, then turn left just after the big tree and go 150 meters. Bear right following signs through the village for about 800m then turn left at the T junction onto the concrete road heading for the hill. The runsite is about 900m from the T junction. Coordinates are: 7° 1'37.97"N 100°37'22.51"E. From Hatyai get to Tha Kham and go east for 6k then turn right just before the big tree and follow the directions above.

Full moon 136: Update

Hatyai Full Moon H3 run #136 takes place tonight with the run starting shortly after 7:00 p.m. and a blow out/camp out to follow. The rego is the usual 50 Baht for active runners but 100 Baht for returnees who haven't been to a run in the last 6 months and new runners. The run site is at the old scout camp on Khuan Lao - the road is shown on the HH3 map on the post below or for the verbally inclined, from Songkhla take the old Hatyai road for 4.6k and turn left for 8k then turn right (at Wat Khao Kloy into Poonakan) and go about 5k.  Turn left just before Wat Tung Ngai (if coming from Hatyai the turning is at about 6k, on the right and just after Wat Tung Nai) and follow the road for about 3.2k then turn right at the hash sign and follow the road/track until...

Then it's up to you. If you are happy driving up the hill then keep going until you hit the run site at about 2k. But if you would prefer to let someone else do the upward bit, then get to the quarry on the right about 1k along the track just as the it starts to go seriously uphill (which HH3 generally use as a runsite) and park there. Gashole's pick up will be running a shuttle service up the hill from about 4:30 p.m. at 30 minute intervals. If you arrive at the quarry and there is no sign of the transport, don't despair, but give Sex Printer (081-7666682) or Kai Jeow (081 9691227) a call and they will comfort you! The last trip up the hill will be at 7:00 p.m. just before the run so if you think you are going to be cutting it a bit fine give us a call while you are on the way so that the truck can be asked to wait for you.

Some of the usual stuff applies: bring a hand/head light if you intend to do the run. There will be a lot of beer all of which will be free and there will also be some ladies drinks as well, so unless you are seriously averse to Leo or Chang but feel the urge to contribute, err on the side of bringing alternative alcohol, i.e not beer. The Hash kitchen will be in action but contributions of food, snacks, hangover cures etc. will also be welcome.

If you seriously feel the need to go home after the run then you'll probably have to either take your own vehicle up or walk down the hill if you have left it in the quarry as there probably won't be any service down after the run. In the morning the shuttle will resume to get people  back to their vehicles but if you need to be away early then you may have to make your own downward arrangements (but hey, it really is all downhill!)

If you are camping then bring a tent or at least a sleeping bag/blanket as there is some covered accommodation for the tentless. Whilst the singing arrangements are not know, we can't promise to control Scud's enthusiasm so if you are a sensitive sleeper some ear plugs may be advisable!

Gan Yao tells it like it is!

Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1872, Saturday, May 6th, 2017, 4:30 p.m.
Hare: Gan Yao
Misdirections: From Songkhla:
From the Kao Seng intersection take the Old Yala Road. At 22.7km bear right on the slip road and at 23.1 go right at the 'T' junction onto Highway 43.

After 400 meters, at the traffic lights zero your trip meter. Go straight along the highway and  turn left at the sign at 2.3km. After 500 MT bear right, follow the dirt track and at 1.2 km take a sharp left under the railway bridge.  Immediately after the bridge bear right.  Follow the track, keeping right at  1.5 KM to the run site marked by the Toyota Starship at 2.4KM  (6° 58.908N  100° 38.065E)

From Hat Yai: From the Klong Wa intersection (Near Makro) take Highway 43 East, passing Na Mom traffic lights at 8.2 km. At 21.4km turn right (at a conveniently located U turn. Ed.). Follow directions as above from ‘Turn left at sign…’

On my last recce there were lots of mosquitoes, bring repellent if they bother you.

And HH3 Sunday? Sex Sprinter draws it like it is, sort of!
Or if you prefer it, from the Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k and turn left. After 8k, at Wat Keow Kloy, turn right into Poonakan for about 5k then turn left just before Wat Tung Ngai and go about 3k then look for the sign on the right and follow the road for 700m. Bear right and follow the road a bit further to the runsite. From Hatyai the turning off of Poonakan is at 6k and is after Wat Tung Ngai.

Heads up! Full moon camp out next week.

Advanced notice that the next Hatyai Full Moon H3 run will be at the top of the hill at Kuan Lao at the former scout camp behind Na Mom, next Tuesday, 9th May. It will be a standard HFMH3 run but there will be a camp-out afterwards, so while active runners will pay the standard  rego of 50 Baht, returning runners will be asked to pay a little more (the GM'ette is thinking about it!)  All pledges of beer or other happy-juice are welcome as are contributions of food. Please let the GM'ette know either on Saturday or Sunday next week if you are coming so that catering can be arranged accordingly. The top of the hill is now accessible to rugged vehicles although 4-wheel drive is recommended. There will be parking/transport facilities at the bottom of the hill available for anyone who does not want to tackle the hill in their vehicle, but again, we need to know that you are coming.
Full details later .
