HH3 yesterday

Here's the track from yesterday's HH3 run. The long run was a shade under 7k with another kilometer or so of false trails. The total ascent was 280m with the highest point being at the big holy rock at about 195m. The trip to the beer stop took Sex Printer 63 minutes (he said he was lucky. Yeah yeah!) about 5 minutes ahead of the rest of the pack. Lesser mortals took even longer with Lady of the Lamp limping in about 40 minutes later whereupon the rest of the farang contingent who had anxiously awaited his arrival (and drunk all the beer as well) took to the back of the beer-stop truck for the trip back to the run site. Meanwhile the short run made good time to the beer stop with Sex Teacher arriving in about 35 minutes from Wat Kao Lam and then all bar Big Jelly cock departed on foot for the run site, so completing somewhere between 4 and 4.5k depending on how rigorously they had stuck to the paper. Big Foot, meanwhile, guessed the direction of the run wrongly and headed down the valley between the two hills before returning to the run site the way he had gone.

Why you don't turn left from this runsite

You're all getting soft. Hear me, soft! A mere 6km including all the bits you didn't really need to do. A bit of shiggy here and there going up and down the hill, but that's the reason we don't use this hill much. Perfect weather, free beer, and a few real trails where you could actually run. Ah well . . . if you want gratitude, get a dog. Like Hippo. He's my buddy! Arrrrrwwwrrrgggaaa!

Somebody measured total ascent at about 300m, which sounds right. Highest point was just 228m. Everybody except Khan Khai made it to the beer stop, which was almost home, in about 1:25, and even he wasn't too much later. The circle was long and spirited and if we didn't drink the beer truck dry we certainly gave it our best shot.

Wetter and better than ever

The hare announces (Harrumph! He's the admin guy why can't he do it himself?):

'Saturday's run will be from a site that I believe was first employed by me for #1758, exactly 100 runs ago (and if you don't believe him, click here)  I've used it again once or twice since, and a couple of other hares have plundered it, most recently Robocop. Accept no substitutes! If you want authentic Wet Beaver, this is the run for you. But hang about, the rain seems to be easing off'. . . . .'

Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers run #1858, Saturday, January 28, 4:30 p.m.
Hare: Robocop Beavershot
Misdirections: Take the Old Hatyai Road for 4.7 km and turn left. Proceed about 10.3 km (i.e. 2.3 km past Wat Khao Kloi) and turn left again. Bear right after 150m and carry on about 2km to the runsite, From Hatyai take Poonakan Rd.from it's junction with Kanjanawanich road for 11 km to Wat Khao Kloi then turn right and go 2.3k, then turn left etc. Coordinates are: 7°0'50.00"N 100°36'18.44"E.

Sunday's HH3 run will be set by Kai Jeow and in true HH3 style, he is being  a bit cagey about exactly where although it will be somewhere in the Napong area. So if you are coming from Songkhla that's 4 km along the OHR, left for 5.4 km then start looking for a sign, probably on the left. From Hatyai take the old road for 13 km from the Ko Hong traffic lights and turn right then go 5.4 km etc.

Now for that recce! Has it stopped raining yet?

The long & the short of it ....the stick that is

OK here it is than, without any foreplay at all. A yardstick production with the assistance of All Black who provided the alcoholic beverage supply for the beerstops.
The long run itself was only a paltry 6.0km, including the 4 false trails. This was somewhat less than was quoted at the pre-run circle by the hare, who conveniently forgot that a number of ‘F’s had been eliminated due to time restraints at the time of laying. The total ascent was about 280m, if you went to the ‘F’ at the very top of the hill, which was about 180m above the runsite. The short run was fairly modest at 2.7km and a total ascent of 110m, but regrettably missed out on the 2 beerstops located at C04 & C06. I think it was generally agreed that both runs were fairly benign, without any beating with large sticks, even providing free laundry services for footwear at the end of the run.
As an insight to the mind of the fanatic hare, a synopsis of the run construction follows. Due to severe time restraints on setting the run due to the harsh weather on the Friday, and other commitments on Saturday morning, the hare devised a crafty scheme for setting the run, with instructions to self.
Run 1857
Go to big tree, take road past soccer field and take road veering right.
Do paper drops at end of road (C04) and where run crosses road (C06). Put up Beerstop signs.
Take dirt road to crossroad. Leave carry bag where run crosses road (C07).
Park at crossroad and do paper drop at top of hill (C02). Remember to take Runsite sign, Short Run sign & short run paper.
Put up Short run sign and lay connecting short paper to C07. Commence laying long run from C07.
Put up Runsite sign at runsite location.
Refill bag at C02.
Refill bag at C04.
Refill bag at C06.
Complete long run at C07. Pick up bag at top of hill?
Put up Right turn sign on track to runsite.
Put up Road Signs at runsite track and at Wat Khun Tong.

Whez da trak?

Today's HH3 run

Well, Yardo hit the area pretty comprehensively yesterday so Sex Printer has sensibly decided to move today's run to the big sala behind the CP factory on the old Hatyai road (from Ko Yo go 6.5k and do a U turn, come back 100m and turn left for 1k to the run site on the right. From Hatyai the turning is about 10.5k from the Ko Hong traffic lights.at the Kanjanawanit/Petkasem intersecton) The hare is promising a flat run.... yeah, right!

Hit me!

Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1857, Saturday January 21st 2017
Hare:Yardstick
Misdirections: From the Khao Seng intersection take the Old Yala Road for 16km (5.3km from the NYR / OYR intersection at Ang Thong) and turn right just before Wat Khun Thong. Proceed along the concrete & bitumen road for 2.7km, turn left and go 1.6km (bearing right) to the runsite amongst the rubber trees.
Runsite co-ordinates are:  7° 1'40.06"N  100°38'3.01"E
For Hatyai visitors go to the Big Tree in the middle of the road at Ban Sai Khao, then go straight ahead past the big tree for 750m and turn right for 1.6km. to the runsite.

Sunday's HH3 run is being set by Sex Printer and will be in the same general area as Saturday's run, i.e somewhere between Khun Thong and Tha Kham. Details will be announced after Saturday's run when he knows what he has left to work with after Yardo has hit the area! They will be posted here as soon as available

Finally, the first quiz night of 2017 will happen at the Office Bar on Friday January 20th at 8:00 p.m. and the quiz will be a retrospective look at 2016 set by Koko. The Hash team finished on something of a high in November last year only losing to a decider question after tying with the evil teachers rather than losing to them by one point in the main quiz. So maybe they can continue this upward trend...or maybe not!

1856

The long run (clockwise in purple) was 6.8k all up, reducing to about 5.5k without the F's and X's. The total ascent was in the region of 300m with the highest point at the end of the second F at 238m. Sex Sprinter who seemed to know instinctively where the run was going was first home in "about an hour",The short run (anti-clockwise in purple and green) which featured rather more water hazards than the long run, crossing and recrossing the same 2 streams on 4 occasions, was 2.7k and as promised, never quite made it to 100m. A number of late arrivals including Ru Man Kap, Kan Kai and Hot Buns attempted it backwards which seemed to work just as well.
With so many new and semi new runners and without so many regulars there was a slightly unreal feel to the whole run, culminating in Suraj being named Fathima at the behest of new runner Stefan. Still. nothing that a case of beer can't remedy!

Bring yer kids

Saturday is Children's Day with all that entails, i.e big traffic queues around town and any attractions which are opening their gates to let the little bug... darlings in. So Saturday's SH3 run will feature a child friendly short run on which any progeny can safely be let loose without encountering any hill higher than 100m or any water course deeper than a nipper's ankle, and the trail will not exceed 3k. The long run, on the other hand, will boldly go etc. and will be for big kids, i.e. the rest of us, Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harrier's run #1856, Saturday 14th January 2017, 4:30 p.m.
Hares: Egghead, Harram, Ma Mick and Thing on a String.
Misdirections: From the Kao Seng intersection take the old Yala road for 16k and turn right just before Wat Khun Thong for 3.5k, then turn left just after the big tree and go 150 meters. Bear right following signs through the village for about 800m then turn left at the T junction onto the concrete road heading for the hill. After 200m take the third turning on the right just before the chicken farm and follow the dirt track for 1k to the run site. Park considerately as there is not a lot of off road parking. Coordinates are: 7.025486N, 100.619056E or thereabouts. From Hatyai get to Tha Kham and go east for 6k then turn right just before the big tree and follow the directions above.

The Hatyai H3 run on Sunday is from Kan Lao on the way up the big hill out beyond Kuan Samroot: take Poonakan from Wat Keow Kloy and turn left after 5.5k just before Wat Tungnai then go 3.5k and turn right then follow the road beyond the end of the concrete to the runsite in the quarry a little way up the hill. The hare is Robocop. From Hatyai the turning off Poonakan is also 5.5k up but on the right.

What did we do to deserve this?

First birds on the hash?
We knew we were in for a rough afternoon when we saw hare Sex Sprinter return from his lay a little after 4 pm. He looked like something the cat dragged in. In fact the first half of the run proved fairly pleasant, looping down along the west side of the hill. But then we turned into the underbrush and started up the nasty east side. Between the rain, the mud, and the gloom it took a real effort just to stay on paper. At least it kept the pack together, with most everyone coming in between 1:10 and 1:15. Thanks to Sex Sprinter for stepping up at short notice but this is a GPS track that I think we'll lock up in the vaults, just to be sure nobody ever tries it again.

For a run just 5.6km long, this one definitely had a few why-am-I-doing-this? moments.

Sex Sprinter to the rescue...again!

With successive hares succumbing to ill health in this the first week of the year, the honor of setting the first run of 2017 falls to Sex Sprinter. Details are:
Songkhla Hash House Harriers' run #1855, Saturday, January 7th 2017, 4:30 p.m.
Hare: Sex Sprinter
Misdirections: From the Ko Yo intersection take the New Yala road for 6.5k then cross over the road and take the unused section of carriageway for 500m to the runsite.
From the Anthong intersection, take the New Yala Road for 3.3k past the run site on the left and do a leftward U turn onto the unused section of carriageway for 500m to the runsite.
From Hatyai, take Kanchanawanit road eastwards for 13k and turn right at the Kuan Hin traffic lights. Go 4k then take the right fork as the road bends to the left for 1.2k, then just after the health center (anami) follow the road as it bends sharp left for 500m to the junction with the New Yala Road. Turn right then immediately cross over and take the unused section of carriageway for 500m to the runsite.  Map below.
After the run, it is probable that there will be an on-on featuring the dulcet tones of the HH3 Karaoke Ensemble at Thung Jaeng which is just down the road.
The second HH3 run of the year, like the first is being set by Robocop and is from the road beyond the chicken farm at Prutoh: From the Nam Noi traffic lights turn left (from Songkhla) or right (from Hatyai) and go 3.1k then turn right for 300m, then right and follow the road for about 1.5k through the village to the run site. Map below.

Under the waxing moon.

Rumours of a town run tomorrow night have been scotched and the 2017 Hatyai Full Moon H3 New Year's run will take place  on Wednesday, 4th January more or less as advertised at the SH3 and HH3 runs last weekend

In view of the possibility of  'orrible weather however, the run site will be outside the Home of Faith, not at the top of the hill and there will be transport provided to the beginning of the run and for anyone who wants it, a lift to the bottom at the end. The Full Moon Hash will be contributing a couple of slabs of beer some of which will magically appear at a beer stop.the rest will be available at the end at the B site along with any food contributed for consumption at that stage. But if anyone wants to supplement the beer supply that's ok as there will be no beer actually on sale. The  run will be set by Inchdick and Sex Teacher and the transport will leave for the A site sharp'ish at 7:00 p.m..

Later in the evening, after the run, there will be a BBQ, a.k.a. a braai, at the Hot Bread Shop  to mark the final departure of Pee Wee and Olive Oyle who are briefly back in Songkhla before finally departing for Trumpica so do come along and run with them and hopefully join them later at the HSB. The Saffers will be providing meat and stuff, but all contributions of food would be gratefully accepted and if you just want to bring along some meat fish or other braai'able food that will be ok.

Details are
Hatyai Full Moon Hash House Harriers, run #133, Wednesday 4th January 2017, 7:00 p.m.
Hares: Inchdick and Sex Teacher
Misdirections. Get to the Ko Yo intersection and take the new Yala road for 800m then turn left for 800m and follow the road round to the right up the hill to the car park outside the Home of Faith

...and SH3's New Year's Eve run

Here, belatedly, is the track from Saturday's, last-run-of-the-year, run by a similarly small pack largely composed of Farangs - the long run entirely so, with Crackwurst and High Ball the only fully vernacular members on the short run. There was a late decision to run the two runs separately rather than shortening the long run and lengthening the short run to match, taken after Kan Kai was prevailed upon to become a long runner, which he did with some aplomb being with the FRB's all the way round. The total distance was about 7k, the F's and X's adding another half a klick, with a total ascent of about 300 meters and a maximum point of 254m reached on three different occasions. The short run was 4.5k and had a total ascent of about 120m. The packs were then treated to the Christmas dinner left-overs in the form of a hearty chicken soup (just right for those tropical winter evenings!) followed by (or preceded by in some cases) the other Christmas pudding complete with last years (i.e. 2015's) brandy butter courtesy of the departed and oft lamented Softy and Temp. No reports so far of what happened after that other than most went on-on into a wet Songkhla and saw in the New Year together or only just apart, as some chose to celebrate its coming in the Corner Beer rather than at the HSB, with Stick Insect, having that afternoon achieved his life's goal of becoming the all-time most prolific runner, temporarily AWOL in another dimension. (Ok, the Cosmos!).

HH3 New Year run

For the first Hatyai Hash of 2017 Robocop set a compact little run, mainly in consideration of the predictably small turnout but maybe also having mercy on their hangovers. Its length looked to be about 4.5km with a total ascent of just 200m, but my watch tends to underestimate ascent (or so I tell myself). There were just over a half dozen long runners and not many more on the short run, and most got back within 50 minutes to an hour. Hope you liked it because I'm going to sneakily steal someone else's run* and do an enhanced-length variant of it for my next run at the end of this month.

*Editor's note: This bit in red was not written by me. As the only other person who can edit posts on this blog and as someone with clearly too much time on his hands, Egghead is the prime suspect. But then if he'd actually done Sunday's run he would have realized that Robocop pretty much stole the whole thing from my last run from this site. I'm just reclaiming it. So there!

Today's HH3 run

... is up near Nern Pijit. From the Ko Yo intersection take the old Hatyai road for 4.7k and turn left for about 10k then look for and turn at the hash sign on the left. From Hatyai get to the top of Poonakan and turn right for about 2k then look for the sign on the left. The hare is Robocop.
